In a ceremony in New York City earlier today. Gwinnett County school system was named the top urban school distict in the country.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan announced the award of “The Broad Prize For Urban Education” to the district which honors the urban system that has the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement while reducing the achievement gap. It is the largest education prize in the country.

An 18-member review board selected the five finalists. Other finalists are Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, N.C., Montgomery County Public Schools, Md., Socorro Independent School District, El Paso, Texas, and Ysleta Independent School District, El Paso, Texas.
